When the carrier unlocks it for free, use that.

If your phone meets T-Mobile's requirements, ask T-Mobile to unlock it — it's free. Use us when you can't wait, the phone was bought used, or it doesn't meet the rules yet (for example, there's still a balance).

Where do I find my IMEI?
  • Type *#06# in the phone's built-in Phone app. It pops up as you type the last # — don't press call.
  • iPhone: Settings › General › About › IMEI
  • Android: Settings › About phone › IMEI (some phones: Status)
  • No luck? It's printed on the SIM tray or the original box.
